The WSET Level 3 in Wine Course is an advanced-level, in-depth investigation of the world of wine for the serious wine student. Students will deeply investigate the world’s major wine styles as they develop a comprehensive understanding of the role of environment/site, growing practices, and winemaking decisions on a wine’s style, quality, and price.

All learning is underscored by use of WSET’s Systematic Approach to Tasting, which acts as your roadmap in your evaluative wine tasting skills.

  • The WSET Level 3 in Wine Course is regionally organized, with exploration of each region diving into grape varieties, growing conditions, and winemaking practices.   • The exam is comprised of two parts. The 30-minute tasting exam includes blind tasting of one red wine and one white wine using the WSET Systematic Approach to Tasting. The 2-hour theory exam includes 50-multiple choice questions and 4 short answer questions. A score of 55% or higher is required to achieve a Pass. A scored of 65% or higher is a Pass with Merit and a score of 80% or higher is a Pass with Distinction.

    51.5 hours of personal study – in addition to class time – is recommended for this course.

  • If you already have an expansive knowledge of wine and are seeking to formalize that knowledge in an advanced-level certification course, the Online WSET Level 3 in Wine Course is a great fit. This challenging program is ideal for dedicated learners seeking a self-directed approach to their studies. 

  • As the learning is self-paced, you’ll work through this interactive, 9-week course on your own schedule with the support of a WSET Online Tutor. Learning is organized around 9 modules and allocating 10 hours per week to stay on track with the learning and assignments is recommended. After completion of the course, you’ll continue to have access to the static content for one year from your registration date, so you can continue to review and prepare for your exam.

  • Yes, wine tasting is essential part of the course and a flexible list of recommended wines to taste will be provided at the start of your course.

    You will also participate in a one-day advanced tasting workshop the day before your scheduled exam. This is your opportunity to refine and calibrate your tasting skills prior to your exam.

  • Course tuition includes WSET Level 3 in Wine Course Study Pack (Understanding Wine: Explaining Style and Quality textbook, study guide, and Systematic Approach to Tasting Card), in-person tasting workshop, certification exam, WSET Level 3 in Wine Certificate, and badge.

  • The WSET Level 3 in Wine Exam is taken in-person at one of our Oregon- or Washington-based exam sites. The exam is comprised of two parts:
